How to Start Your Own Business or Service
Garland C. Perry | BlackAmericaLibrary | March 2010

In 2005 I was looking for ways to raise my income.  There was only one way I knew of to accomplish my mission was to find work that paid more money.  I started the process by doing the norm, looking for work that I had knowledge, skills and
abilities to do.  An idea came to me while I was looking for work, that said, instead of looking for work that had the credentials to do, why not look at all the available jobs in the Sunday newspaper and see what knowledge, skills and abilities I had for every job listed.  So that's what I did.  I got a Sunday newspaper, I got out a pen and some paper and started down the list of available jobs.

I make three separate list.  As I read each job description, I searched within myself to see if I had any knowledge, skills or abilities that matched the job description.  I also included jobs on my list that sounded like cool jobs or jobs I wouldn't mind doing.  I listed 12 jobs from the Sunday paper.  Some of them I had the credentials to do, some of them I knew how to do but didn't have the training or credentials for and the others were jobs I felt was cool jobs but I didn't have any knowledge or skills for.

I ended up getting a job from the list of jobs I felt was cool jobs to have.  I became an over-the-road tractor/trailer driver.  This jobs matched me like a hand in glove.  I was born and raised in the country and loved being outside.  This job allowed me to work outside.  I alway liked going to new places.  This job allowed me to see a lot of new places and a lot of this country with my on eye.  I have seen some of the most breath taking sun rises and sun sets you can imagine being out on the road.
I have seen drop dead gorgeous lands and countryside any eyes have seen.  To top it off, I accomplished my goal by raising my income $15,000 a year as a truck driver.

The Lesson

The lesson I learned was from the Sunday newspaper.  The newspaper acted as a source for me to test my own knowledge, skills and abilities against the jobs that were listed.   I found out, " we don't know what we know unless we have some way of testing ourself to find out exactly how much we do know" about a subjests. Our goal is to help you start a business of your own.  I'm going to test your knowledge, skills and abilities to find out how much you already know that relates to businesses and services.  From this test, you are going find out for yourself that you posses a tremendous amount of knowledge about business and find the business or service you want to own.

The knowledge, skills and abilities we posses are from various sources, such as, our age, our background, where we were raised, the families we grew up in, the jobs we've had, the hobbies we like and all sort of information such as this, are factors in how much we know.  Even though I didn't have any knowledge or skill for the job I ended up with.  I found out why the job match me like a hand in glove.  It was from my life experiences, such as growing up in the country, loving the outdoors, contributed to the job fitting me so well.

How It Work and Why

I used the same method to start my own business.  The only different was I didn't
use a newspaper as my source.
My job at the time was a source in itself.   I was going from businesses to businesses everyday.  I was able to get a close up look at businesses on a daily basic.  As I went from business to business everyday.  It was the businesses I didn't see out there everyday that lead to the development of BlackAmericaLibrary.com.  I didn't see any Black owned businesses and this lead me to a question, where are they?  I started searching the Internet and various other sources looking for the answer but there weren't any.  Then, the idea came to me to create this website, a place where Black Americans can find Black people in business as a whole.

I wanted to share my story, my experience and what I have found out as an end result before we started talking about how to start your own business.   We are going to use a source to test how much knowledge, skills and abilities you posses that relates to business.  With this information in hand, you are going to find the
business you would like to own.  These are the exact steps I took to raise my income and start my business.  Having a source to go by or look at, is the key to finding out what fits you the best.

1.  The first step is to find what knowledge, skills and abilities you have that relates to business or service.  In order to do this we need a source to go to.  We will use the list of businesses and services we have provide for you or you can use any source you like, such as the yellow pages, click here

2.  From your source, whether it's the list we've provided or one you choose.  Write down all the things you are already doing or have credentials to do that relates to the businesses and services on the list.  For example:  If Accounting is the first business or service on your source list.  Put it on your list if are already working in the field for somebody else.  This is something you already know how to do.
The only different is you'll doing it for somebody else business and not your own. Next, from the list of businesses, write down all the things you know how to do even if you don't have the credentials to do them and then write down all the businesses you think would be cool to do.

3.  Brainstorm the list.  Go over the list of businesses and services you have written down and find at least one business or service you want to do. Make sure whatever you choose is sound, implementable, and fit within your budget today.  It doesn't make sense to choose a business or service you want to start if it cost a lot of money to get started and you don't have the money or can't get the money.

4.  Develop a plan of action and get started.
Developing a plan of action is simply starting from where you are, with what you have, at the beginning.  And believe me,  you have all you need to get started.  For example:  Once I had decided on the business I wanted, which was to start this website.  My first step was to decide if I was going to buy a website off the Internet or have someone build one for me. After I researched all the available options, it became clear to me, it would be better for me to learn how to do it myself.  That way I wouldn't be depending on a web designer for my every need or making changes to my website when I need to.

5.  After you are ready, one of your first steps is getting your products or services out into the public by advertising.  Get you website, products or services out in the public immediately. One reason to get it out immediately is because once you do, it will drive you to continue.  You are going to make mistakes and people are going to let you know when you made one.  That's good because now you can fix the mistakes and keep moving on.  Another reason to start advertising is because there are people out here that are looking and interested in what you have to offer. Look at our website, we are still editing and changing stuff, yet people are advertising with us.  So, go ahead and get started.

6.  Another way you can start a business or service is to turn your hobbies into a profitable business or service.  For example:  If you make blankets, pillows, chairs, tables, etc as a hobby or as a way to make extra money, turn them into a profitable business or service.  Your first step is to start advertising on BlackAmericaLibrary.com.

7.  The first place you should start advertising is with BlackAmericaLibrary.com, its Free.

8.  Once you start advertising with us, as a gift and to help you get a jump start.
We will send you a list of approximately 38 other places you can advertise your business or service off line.  Most of them cost pennies and you can do them yourself.

9.  If you have make it this far down the page and still have questions, send me your phone number and I will call you between 8-9 AM (ET).   Go to our Contact Us page and send me your number.

Best wishes and success to all of you who start your own business or service.  If we can assist you in any other way, please let us know.  You can reach us at our Contact Us page or email us at garland@blackamericalibrary.com.
